Soho, W1D and W1F, for the hours when the night gets interesting

Soho is a grid of short streets, each with its own mood. Dean Street and Frith Street hold the restaurants and the late clubs. Greek Street is quieter, full of little dining rooms. Berwick Street still has its market stalls by day and record shops in between. Carnaby Street and Kingly Court, on the western edge, are all courtyards and cocktail bars, while Soho Square sits at the top, a patch of green with a tiny timbered hut in the middle where the neighbourhood comes to breathe.

The mix is the point. Within five minutes you can go from a hushed dining room to a bar where the music is loud and the crowd is dancing. A companion who knows Soho can choose which version of it suits your evening.

The Soho Hotel on Richmond Mews, just off Dean Street, with bold colour everywhere and a busy bar at its front. Ham Yard Hotel, set around a tree lined courtyard near Piccadilly Circus, with its own theatre and a vintage bowling alley downstairs. Dean Street Townhouse, a Georgian house turned into rooms above one of the liveliest dining rooms on the street. The Londoner, on Leicester Square at the southern edge of Soho.

Think of them as landmarks for the map rather than partners, since no hotel in W1D or W1F has any arrangement with us. A companion enters as your guest, and the flats and apartments above the shops are visited the same way.

Tottenham Court Road is about 3 minutes from Soho Square, with the Central and Northern lines and the Elizabeth line out to Paddington and Heathrow. From Old Compton Street it is roughly 4 minutes to Leicester Square and its Northern and Piccadilly lines. Carnaby Street is about 6 minutes' walk from Oxford Circus, where the Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines meet.

At night most of our companions arrive by taxi, and the one way streets of Soho mean she may step out on the corner rather than at the door. Tell the desk the nearest landmark and she will find you.

Start with one message, WhatsApp or Telegram, naming the girl you like, your hotel or address, the start time and the hours you want. Replies come in minutes. Once the details are agreed, the desk checks your full name, hotel and room and asks for a 25 percent bank transfer, which locks the evening in for both of you. Planning an overnight, or taking her to a party or event? Then the deposit is half the fare, and the part set aside for travel cannot be returned.

Soho is one of the nearest stops on our route, and she is usually with you around 35 minutes after confirmation. Friday and Saturday nights can add a few minutes, when the streets are at their fullest. The rest of the fare is yours to settle on the night, in cash or through a bank transfer.

Nine o'clock at Bar Termini on Old Compton Street, a tiny room where the coffee and the negronis are taken equally seriously. Ten, a table at Quo Vadis on Dean Street, its stained glass windows glowing onto the pavement. Past midnight, the downstairs room at Ronnie Scott's, where the lights are low and nobody talks through the solos. Then an espresso at Bar Italia across the road, still open when almost everything else has closed, before the short ride back to your room.

That evening fits neatly into a four hour dinner date at £1,300. If you would rather skip the jazz, ninety minutes at £600 or two hours at £750 cover a drink and a long conversation back at the hotel.

People who come to Soho for its energy and do not want to explore it alone. Guests at the boutique hotels here are often in town for a production meeting, a gallery opening or a long weekend, and they want a companion with opinions about music and cocktails who can move easily from a loud bar to a quiet room. Others simply want someone warm to share a late supper with after a day of work nearby.

Cross Charing Cross Road and you are in Covent Garden, all theatres and cobbles. Regent Street leads west into the calm of Mayfair, and Oxford Street separates Soho from Marylebone to the north. The lights of the wider West End begin at Shaftesbury Avenue.
